The waxing is thicker than a typical flat waxed cotton lace you might have seen.
I would recommend waxed if you have speed hooks and unwaxed if your boots have all eyelets. Speed hooks could possibly catch and snag unwaxed flat laces.
These are strong Nylon flat laces which are much tougher than the typical cotton flat lace. Aglets are 4mm due to the thickness of the laces, so will not fit in most dress shoes or dressier boots.
Waxing will affect the color of the laces, it typically darkens the colors and can leave a tacky/waxy feeling and tend to make the laces stiffer. It will take away any shine or luster the laces have. Think of how wet jeans look compared to dry jeans.
